LEGISLATORS LEADERSHIP COUNCIL ON WOMEN AND HIV/AIDS

The LEGISLATORS LEADERSHIP COUNCIL ON WOMEN AND HIV/AIDS is the first national initiative led by state legislators that emphasizes women’s human rights in every aspect of HIV/AIDS programming -- from access to care, to prevention, to confidential testing.

Women are the invisible and growing casualty of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Some of the most effective strategies and public policies to address this epidemic will come from state legislators.

A partnership with state legislators is a natural next step for the Center’s National Resource Center on Women and AIDS Policy.  Over two decades, we have published more than two dozen reports, produced an award winning video “Fighting for Our Lives”: Women Confronting HIV/AIDS, written the first federal legislation on microbicide research, and conducted a five-year federally funded program that nurtured the policy leadership of women living with HIV/AIDS – the Metro DC Collaborative for Women Living with HIV/AIDS.

The LEGISLATORS LEADERSHIP COUNCIL ON WOMEN AND HIV/AIDS will work with its members in legislatures nationwide to promote woman-centered HIV/AIDS state policies and programs, to educate and engage diverse state and local constituencies, and to influence federal policy.

More than 30 legislators have joined the LEGISLATORS LEADERSHIP COUNCIL ON WOMEN AND HIV/AIDS as charter members
